Exorbitant Meal Disappoints Chinese Donors

An online poll shows more than 90 percent of respondents have lost faith in the Red Cross after it was involved in an exorbitant meal scandal, reports Shandong Business Daily.

An Internet user named 'xiao Xuehui' disclosed a 9,859 yuan (1509.8 US Dollars) meal invoice of Shanghai's Luwan District Red Cross on Apr 15, after which overwhelming criticism was targeted at the Red Cross. Internet user 'Santiago old man' strongly proposed that Red Cross publish its detailed expenditures, including entertainment, accommodation and gift expenses.

Faced with criticism, the Red Cross Society of China said the meal fee was paid by funds given by the government, not donations from the public, but the Luwan District Red Cross should pay for the excess consumption of 150 yuan per person.

According to the report, the meal was an official activity with related businesses, with 17 Red Cross staff participating. An investigation has been launched into the matter.
