"Happy Boy" Competition Launched

Thanks to the popularity of the "Super Girl" singing contest, this year, another round of the "Happy Boy" competition was launched by Hunan Satellite TV Station. However, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, or SARFT, has just made it clear that sensational scenes like competitors crying and audience members cheering enthusiastically must cut when the program is broadcast. So today let's follow Zhao Zhuang for a look at what the mass media say about this.

Nanfang Daily quoted SARFT as saying the competition should maintain a positive and upbeat atmosphere. The show should not focus on the competitors' sensationalistic behavior on stage, their anecdotes or the audience's crazy behavior. To SARFT, it's nothing more than a mere competition to demonstrate the artistic qualities of the competitors.

A Rednet opinion points out the requirement made by SARFT doesn't forbid scenes of competitors and their relatives' crying, just minimizing the scenes when broadcasting. It's to present saner images of the competitors and to keep a cheerful and healthy atmosphere for the audience.

Another RedNet opinion commentary said "Happy Boy" was originally titled "Super Boy." It was renamed simply because the new name is said to bear a more positive connotation. The opinion said crying is a very normal way for people to release their emotions. Fierce as the competition is, it's also natural for men to shed tears in front of the audience. Such scenes are true recordings of the difficulties the competitors face and the efforts they make for showing their talents. When crying, the competitors not only reveal their fragile sides, but also prove the toughness they bear when competing with others in front of such a large audience. This RedNet opinion believes such a message will not achieve any negative effect when broadcasting across the nation.
