In
1984 CRI English Service successfully celebrated the 35th
birthday of New China in its own special way for the first
time-with live broadcasting for two hours. This live broadcasting
covered
North America, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and some other
big
cities in China. |

| In 1999,
The CRI English Service broadcast live the 50th birthday celebration
of New China, the event of Macao's Return to China, the '99
Kunming International Horticultural Exposition, '99 Shanghai
Fortune Forum and four other major events in one year. The eight
successful live broadcasts set a new record. |

For many Chinese people, the most important events to welcome
the new millennium on December 31,1999 were held at the China
Century Monument in Beijing. CRI English service broadcast live
the event in English to listeners at home and around the world.
