East China's Guys Measure Well
2006-05-20 14:14:32    Shanghai Daily
(By Chen Liying) Shanghai's men may be getting fatter, but they still cut a trimmer figure than guys in other parts of China.
These findings were the result of a survey by Shanghai-based Donghua University and apparel maker Hengyuanxiang Group designed to help garment manufacturers produce the right fits for the right markets.

In the first large-scale study on urban populations since 1987, researchers spent five years measuring more than 3,000 men age 20 to 50 around the country.

The greater the differential between the chest and waist measurements, the more fit the subject was considered to be.

Men in east China, including Shanghai and neighboring provinces, came out as the trimmest nationwide.

The average differential between chest and waist circumferences of the men in east China was 9.8 centimeters, beating the national average of 9.54 centimeters.

The lowest ratio was discovered in males living in China's southwest, signaling they are the least fit in the country, said Zhang Wenbin, a professor who was responsible for the survey.

"People living in more economically developed areas tend to be more fit than those living in less developed urban areas because they have more knowledge about healthy foods and pay more attention to exercise," Zhang said.

Even so, the survey showed that men in east China are growing heavier. The percentage of overweight males in the region doubled to 60 percent from 30 percent in the previous survey.

"Only 6.3 percent of all men in east China were deemed thin by the survey," said Chen Zhongwei, vice general manager of Shanghai-based garment maker Hengyuanxiang.
