Don't Wanna Grow Up
2006-05-09 10:32:07    CRIENGLISH.com
Many of today's young adults were brought up watching cartoons. Though they soon outgrow the cartoons they enjoyed as children, whenever they see the classical animated characters, sweet childhood memories come flooding back. Feeling nostalgic, some even collect products and wear outfits bearing these cute images as if to say, "I don't wanna grow up".

23-year-old Annie should have passed the age of being a cartoon fan long ago. Though most of the time she dresses in serious-looking business attire, especially at work, during off-hours she likes to wear a Mickey Mouse or Bambi Tee and can also be seen sporting a shiny pink Hello Kitty handbag. She says she likes just about everything emblazoned with cartoon images.

"Among all the characters, I like Xiaowanzi, Maruko best, that cheerful and funny little girl. When I re-watch that TV series, it reminds me of my childhood. And now I like to buy different accessories like purses, watches and earrings with cartoon images. Seeing the cute and chic things, I just can't help but pay for them."

There are tens of thousands of young girls like Annie who are already grown-ups but want to stay teens. And businessmen certainly won't miss the chance to take as much money as possible out their pockets.

Japan's Sanrio Co. has opened its first theme shop in Shanghai, bringing its most famous character, Hello Kitty, to China. The moon-faced cat is one of the most popular licensed characters in the world and a favorite among girls.

Girls fall in love with the pink world upon first stepping into the cute kitty themed shop. The whole place is stacked with products from stuffed dolls, stationery, and clocks, to handbags, jewelry, and clothing, all embellished with Hello Kitty's image.

A sales clerk in the store named Miss Zhang says most of the customers are 20 something girls.

"Hello Kitty products are the best sellers in our shop. The feminine designs are favored by many young ladies. Owning accessories with the cartoon image has become very fashionable."

And as if small accessories aren't enough, girls like to wear clothing with cartoon characters from Mickey and Minnie to Donald Duck, and Wonder woman to Popeye, anything as long as it's cute.

A sales clerk at the Disney Couture store, Miss Yao, says their clothes also cater to adults.

"We have all sizes from small to extra large. So our clothes are suitable to both kids and adults."

So you can feel free to jump into the warmth of a Mickey Mouse getup, whether you are a cartoon fan or you miss you childhood or just never want to grow up.
