If you live in Beijing, you don't have to spend a lot of money to get back in touch with nature. Short-distant trips to suburban Beijing are favored by many locals. This spring, more travel routes have been designed to meet people's needs.

The pear garden in Daxing District boasts several number ones: it's claimed to be the biggest and oldest in Beijing and it also has the largest variety of pear trees. Not only that, but their flowers blossom first, attracting the visits of many impatient Beijingers.

"It only takes dozens of yuan to get here. And not only can I have a relaxing tour, but I can also enjoy the great scenery."

"I've just come to have a look at the natural scenery and have a taste of home-cooked food by the local peasants."
The suburb of Beijing

To meet people's needs, the Beijing Tourism Bureau has just introduced 24 routes to suburban Daxing District, Pinggu and Miyun Counties. And the offerings not only include normal activities like living at local peasants' guest houses and enjoying their food but they also makes full use of local specialties as well. Fruit picking, hot springs and fishing tours are the latest trends.

Xiong Yumei is the vice director of the Tourism Bureau.

"The newly designed tours have associated the scenic spots with lodging at peasants' homes so that Beijingers can enjoy better one-and-two-day suburban trips."

And every district and county is trying a different way towards making their own offerings stand out.

Lao Song a peasant in Daxing District who's gained notoriety for his giant watermelons has now successfully planted big pumpkins weighing in at over a hundred kilograms.

And, Pinggu County's Jiangjunguan Village is the first village in Beijing to provide villas for accommodation. Over 80 villas there can hold over 100 families at a time.

"We hope Beijing's urbanites can both enjoy the beautiful sceneries and cultural heritage found in the suburbs and have a nice holiday at peasants' guest houses."

Do-it-yourself tourist can log on to the Tourism Bureau's official website for detailed information on every route. And others can also book spaces on the package tours provided at travel agencies.

So, have you decided where to go for a spring-outing?
