The newspaper Democracy & Law reports that in a recent police operation the Hangzhou police arrested 10 prostitutes, of which, astonishingly, half turned out to be college students.

This is not an isolated case. Many reports and surveys have indicated that some female university students are involved in sex work. This has left people wondering why university students, the envy of others, degrade themselves to sell sex.
An article on internet portal Sina.com attempts to understand the reasons. Some of these students are from poor families and are trying to make more money for them. Others are simply influenced by the desire to live a life of luxury. Whatever the reasons, something important has been lost by these girls. They have lost their "ego", that is their self-esteem, independent personality and freedom.
At the same time universities share some of the responsibility. When a university enrolls a student, he or she enters into a consumer-and-service-provider relationship with the university. But the reality is that many universities don't take precautions to prevent their students becoming involved in wrong doing, turning a blind eye to their students becoming call girls and simply expelling them if they are caught by the police in order to protect the reputation of the universities. The student's rights are ignored.
The author of the sina.com piece calls for immediate measures to take control of the problem and protect campuses from the bad influence of such activities.
