Happy Dog Louis' Happy Life

Click to listen to the interview with Neville Mars.
I'll never forget the first day I met Louis. It was at the opening ceremony of a charity auction called Commonplace, a black and white dog walked into the hall with her owner. She was the only animal guest in the room that night and she was so sweet, she seemed to almost say "hi" to everyone with her unique gestures – sometimes jumping up on people and even licking them.

We all agreed Louis was the happiest puppy we've ever met, as she enjoyed the company of humans so much. In private, we gave her the name 'happy dog'. So you can image how astonished we were when we heard she was a stray up until only one year ago. Hugely curious, we paid a visit to Louis and her "Dad", Neville Mars, last week.

It was a chilly day in Beijing and we drove about an hour to get to Neville's studio in the Dashanzi art district in North Beijing. And there was Louis, playing around joyfully in the studio. Neville tells us he usually takes Louis everywhere he goes, even to restaurants and bars (needless to say, we met her at an auction). And he's very stubborn - if a restaurant refuses to admit Louis, they go somewhere else.

Ever since he was a young boy, Neville had hoped to have his own dog, insisting on adopting one instead of buying one, his yearnings eventually leading him to meet Louis by chance. Neville's partner presented Louis to him just one year ago. She was so ugly at the time, very small, pale and wet. Neville guessed she had just fallen into water, but the reality was much worse. As soon as he realized she might be sick, he took her to the hospital immediately. It seems she had contracted some kind of skin disease and was very sick. For the following three weeks they went to the hospital everyday to get shots and medical care for Louis. Doctors warned them the skin disease might be infectious, but they insisted on holding the sick dog in their arms.

Louis recovered slowly and has since amazingly transformed into a beautiful and delightful creature. The experience has also made Louis trust people and want to stay with them for comfort. And now, she not only has her beloved 'Dad' but has even found a doggy boyfriend. I guess that's why she always looks so happy
