After discovering what was happening to the peacocks, many Beijingers offered to adopt these beautiful birds. Each peacock cost 600 yuan. Buyers could walk through the peacock garden to pick the one they liked. Meanwhile, three workers from the Haidian Animal Epidemic Prevention Administration Bureau were responsible for registering the peacocks and signing papers to prove the peacocks were in good condition.
The peacock garden located partway up the mountain at Fragrant Hills was built six years ago in collaboration with a businessman surnamed Xiao from Zhejiang Province. Due to a recent lack of money, he decided to kill four of the peacocks in an effort to profit from selling their meat. He then abandoned the other living birds last week.
The remaining peacocks in the park all finally found new shelters through purchase or adoption by local residents.
