20-year-old Li Xuebin sheepishly admits that she is very curious about sex, bending over a glass display case for a closer look at a marble penis whose origins date back to the 4th century. She says it's interesting to see what sex culture was like in ancient China. But at schools today, they are taught very little about sex, and most of her peers learn about it on the Internet.
Sponsored by the State Population Control Bureau and the Guangdong Provincial Society of Sexual Studies and Disease Prevention, the Third Guangzhou Sex Festival featured panel discussions and three exhibitions, including Chinese Sex Culture, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and the exhibition on AIDS and its Prevention. Organizers promised the event would be 'open and bold,' welcoming adults as well as teenagers.
A large number of locals thronged the halls on the first day of the festival. Among the visitors, some were fathers seeking tips for good sex education to their children. Mr. Liu is one of them.
"I always find it hard to face questions about sex from my child. So I came here for some proper methods of sex education. After this visit, I can at least answer some of his questions."
Compared to other similar events around the country, the Guangzhou sex festival is the largest in scale and more open and bold in style. That's why many insiders try to learn something from it.The director of the Hong Kong Sex Education Association, says that sex education in Hong Kong is also lacking. Most young people in Hong Kong only obtain superficial sex knowledge via the Internet. He hopes that the next sex festival will be held in Hong Kong.
"I hope to bring this good cultural festival to Hong Kong. In fact, in February of next year, a sex cultural festival will in held in Hong Kong. We hope, through our efforts, that people can change their perspectives of sex being something bad or ugly.Ħħ Experts say that poor sex education teaching generates a negative backlash as students, eager to learn, turn to other sources, such as newspapers, videos and the Internet.
Exposure to pornography has implanted a misperception of sex into students' minds, giving rise to a growing level of sex crimes in China.
So now is the time to attach greater importance to sex education in China.
