Pushing Existing Material to Their Limits

[Beat Karrer]

This past week has been an inspiring and innovative one for people in Beijing as the Beijing Design Week gathered hundreds of designers from home and abroad to demonstrate their new ideas. In a previous edition, we met a German designer, who has an idea of opening a space for people in all cultural background to socialize. We continue to explore more in the designer's world and meet another one from Switzerland who brought a newly designed material to Beijing in this edition.

Beat Karrer has always been interested in material innovation and pushing existing material to their limits. Starting from 2007, he began to focus on a new material where the main components are renewable resources. After six years, he successfully made the material absolutely biodegradable, odor free, and emission free.

Karrer believes that progressive projects must react to innovation, reflect people's requirements and respect the environment. Although a designer must cooperate closely with his partners, Karrer expressed that one must know what is the right thing to do, and never lose his determination. Keep Smiling is a must for Karrer since he is welcoming every new challenge that brings him the fun.

Beat Karrer said it was never easy for a team to create a new material in such a short time. After a lecture he gave in Beijing Design Week, he talked to Voices From Other Lands, telling about the most difficult parts during the past six years, and how he managed to get over those moments when he felt desperate and almost dropped the idea.
