The Mekong River, known as the Lancang in China, is the heart and soul of mainland Southeast Asia. The river supports one of the world's most diverse fisheries, second only to Brazil's Amazon River.

Because of the fast economic development, the local governments along the river decided to build large hydraulic power stations to quench the energy thirst. However, the local communities along the Mekong River are opposing the idea, saying it will destroy the local environment and the culture.

Grace Mang has been to the greater Mekong River region for many times. As the China Program Director of International Rivers, she talked to local people about their concerns, and attended meetings and seminars to find solutions in the last eight years.

Voices From Other Lands found her at a seminar held by the Heinrich Boll foundation recently in Beijing. We sat down one morning at Grace Mang's residence in an old Beijing Hutong area, and talked about her observation of the Mekong River protection issue. When asked about whether we can find the balance between development and environmental protection, she says, "for knowing people can work on complex issues,in terms of bringing back the environment into the equation makes me see that it is possible because we are working through these issues in Australia."
