France has come under fire for expelling members of the Roma minority group. Since July nearly 1000 people have been deported to Romania and Bulgaria. Opponents of the move say French President Sarkozy is using the Roma issue to bolster sagging approval ratings. Others say France is in violation of EU treaties regarding immigration from other EU states. The Roma, also known as Gypsies, have been persecuted in Europe for centuries.
