Environmental Protection Crucial to Tibet

A senior Tibetan official says preservation of the environment and traditional culture is vital to the region.

Qiangba Puncog, Chairman of the Tibetan Autonomous Region, told reporters in Hong Kong that Tibet has stepped up its modernization drive to improve people¡¯s lives.

He also reaffirmed Tibetan people¡¯s determination to increase protection of the ecology.

At present, Tibetan natural reserves occupy an area of 400 thousand square kilometers, accounting for nearly one third of the region¡¯s total size.
