China's State Administration of Forestry made the announcement at the Asia RAMSAR Convention in Beijing.

With the ratification of the Eling and Zhaling wetlands, China's largest and highest plateau has become one of the most important plateau wetlands in the world.

The Sanjiang Natural Protection Zone, with an area of 360,000 kilometers inland on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, is the origin of the Yangzte, Yellow and Lancang Rivers.

The current RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands has praised China for its wetlands protection.

With 7.5 billion yuan investment, the protection of the important river origins will also improve ecological protection of the entire Mekong River region in south east Asia.
