Security measures to be taken in the Sochi Winter Olympic Games will be appropriate, a high-ranking official of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Wednesday.

Security measures to be taken in the Sochi Winter Olympic Games will be appropriate, a high-ranking official of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Wednesday.

"I'm sure that here everything possible will be done to guarantee the safety of participants and guests of the Games in Sochi," IOC vice president Tomas Bach told reporters in Sochi.

Russia vowed to tighten security for the Sochi Winter Games in 2014 following the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three and injured over 170 others earlier this week.

"Everyone is still in state of shock from this incident, which turned sporting competition into tragedy," local sports media R-sports quoted Bach as saying.

Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said Tuesday the blasts in Boston would not affect the preparations for the Sochi Winter Olympics due next February, the Summer Universiade in Kazan and the World Athletics Championship in Moscow due this summer.

"For Russia, this is a serious alarm. Of course, we would tighten security. We have very serious security conception," he said.

The Black Sea resort of Sochi is located near the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, the seedbed of large-scale terrorist activities in Russia in the past few years.
