Beijing sports authority held a press conference Tuesday announcing that the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Challenge Beijing will be held at the National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest on May 21.

Li Jinkang, deputy director of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports, explained further. "According to the requirements of the IAAF, an IAAF World Championships in Athletics (WCA) host city has the experience to host events like the world-challenge games."

Beijing won the bid to host the 2015 IAAF WCA in 2010, and accordingly it will organize the world challenge games in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

As for whether Beijing can have its own fixed international athletic league, like the Shanghai Diamond League, Li said: "I believe it will be possible for Beijing to host athletic events like the Shanghai Diamond League only if we host the 2015 WAC successfully."

Ninety-nine Chinese athletes will participate in the event. Three-hundred volunteers will be selected from universities to help service it.
