Fabio Capello has resigned as England manager after a meeting with the FA at Wembley on Wednesday.
"The Football Association can confirm that Fabio Capello has today resigned as England manager," reads the official FA statement. "In a meeting for over an hour, Fabio's resignation was accepted and he will leave the post of England manager with immediate effect."
FA chairman David Bernstein gave tribute about Capello's contribution to the team. "We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future."
The disagreement about John Terry's England captaincy between Capello and the FA sparked the departure of the 65-year-old Italian coach.
The Italian, who started leading the Three Lions in 2008, challenged the FA's decision to remove Terry's armband publicly via the Italian state media RAI last Sunday.
The 31-year-old John Terry was stripped of the England captaincy due after allegedly racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand and being charged with a racially aggravated public order offence.
Now the FA promoted Under-21 head coach Stuart Pearce to take charge of England's friendly against the Netherlands on February 29th in London. |
