Marussia Virgin Racing has announced that French GP2 driver Charles Pic will replace Jerome D'Ambrosio and race for the team in 2012 alongside German driver Timo Glock.

"I'm very happy to be making the step up to Formula One with Marussia Virgin Racing", said Pic, "I like the team a lot; we worked well together in the test and I feel very comfortable... I'm looking forward to working hard in every area over the winter to ensure I am ready for the start of testing and my first Grand Prix."

The 21-year-old had his first taste of the Formula One experience in the MVR-02 at last week's Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi, where he gave an impressive performance.

"We put him through a series of tough tests to thoroughly evaluate his potential", Virgin's team principal John Booth admitted he was satisfied with the rising star's skills; "He continued to improve in every area but his race simulation work particularly caught our eye."

Pic competed in GP2 for two years and finished the 2011 year in fourth place overall after grabbing three pole positions, two victories and five podium finishes.

The young Frenchman will stay at Virgin's technical center in the UK for a few weeks in order to acquaint himself with the team before February, at which point pre-season testing begins.

"He has an extremely mature head on young shoulders, so I have no doubt that he will be working very hard over the winter to prepare for his debut season", John Booth added.
