The most famous sight on Putuo Mountain is the 33-metre-high bronze and gold statue of the Goddess of Mercy. Erected in 1997, it has been visited by millions of pilgrims every year. This incredible work of art has become a popular symbol of Mount Putuo.

Taohua Island

Taohua Island is another popular spot in the Zhoushan archipelago. It's original name meant "mountain of blossoming peach trees." In fact, there are no peach trees here; the name is inspired by the rocks scattered throughout the island, with natural patterns resembling peach blossoms. According to legend, the markings were painted in ink by a hermit named An Jisheng who lived on the island during the Qin Dynasty.

Covered with rich forest and rolling hills, Taohua Island is blessed with spectacular scenery, with natural formations that inspire a variety of meaningful images. For example, Tanzhi Hill, on the east of the island, resembles a sword thrust toward the sky. On Longzhu Beach, a set of three-metre-high twin rocks stand side by side. A stone ball inserted between them at their base creates the image of a giant stone dragon with a pearl in its mouth; hence the meaning of beach's name, Magic Pearl of the East Sea. Further along the beach is a 6-metre high rock, which because of its form has been given the name "Turtle Gazing Downwards."

The island also has a connection to a famous novel. Those who have read "The Legend of the Condor Heroes," by the renowned kung-fu author Jinyong, will find that Taohua Island has a lot in common with an island described in the novel, which is covered with thousands of peach trees. In 2001, Jinyong visited Taohua Island, and expressed his amazement at the similarities of the island's appearance.

That same year, a television series was made based on Jinyong's novel, and Taohua Island was chosen as the perfect setting. In preparation for filming, Taohua Villa was built, in accordance with the description of a house in the novel. The elegant structure is made of wood, and the rooms are each named after the characters in the story. The heroes from the drama have since long departed the scene, but as you linger on the island, it is easy to sense the atmosphere the story evoked.

Another must-see in Zhoushan archipelago is Zhu-Jia-Jian Island. It is recognized for its remarkable Baishan, the white cliffs that line its beaches. The excitement of climbing the cliffs can be further intensified -- for those brave and determined enough -- to venture through its three rugged cave passages.

The coast of ZhuJiaJian Island is five kilometres long, lined with delightful beaches famous for their fine sand and crystal-clear waters. On the island's southern coast is an area called the "Golden Beach of the East China Sea." Every year in September, the National Sand Sculpture Festival is held here. The beach is then covered with hundreds of sculptors from China and around the world, performing their magic of turning sand into works of art.

Wushi Tang is another interesting spot on ZhuJiaJian Island. Unlike the island's other beaches, sand is hard to find on this area of coast. As its Chinese name "Wushi" indicates, seaside is lined with black shingle stones. However, the landscape here creates gorgeous views, especially under a flaming sunset, with local fishing boats moored in the waters near the shore. For a small amount of money, visitors can hire a boat for a leisure trip to enjoy the scenery from another viewpoint.

For visitors looking for a really soothing experience, the best time to visit Wushi Tang Beach is late at night. On a clear summer evening, if you lie on the moonlit beach and listen carefully, you can hear a symphony of nature mixed with the sound of waves breaking on the shingle stones, accompanied by the murmuring breeze. The experience seems to wash away any lingering pressures of life.
