Piazza Castello
This palace is located in the heart of the city: in piazza Castello. It is a magnificent example of 18th Century architecture. On various occasions expanded and refurbished, it was first the residence of the King of Sardinia (through 1659), and then that of Vittorio Emanuele II (until 1965). Carlo and Amedeo di Castellamonte were responsible for the structure, Carlo Morello for the facade. You can visit the luxurious royal apartments which conserve the original furnishings and which look onto piazza Castello. In front of the palace, a large space encloses two giant equestrian statues of the Dioscuri. Behind the palace you can enter the well kept Royal Gardens – designed in 1697 by André Le Notre, "father" of the park of Versailles – which get transformed in summer into a theater for concerts and events. Not far from the Palace, the Duomo di San Giovanni Battista, the Teatro Regio, Palazzo Madama, the Biblioteca Reale, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo. (from: extratorino.it)
