If you go
Where to stay: Forget trying to book a room here for the Olympics, there is no availability at any of Turin's hotels. It is not a very nice situation from the tourists' point of view. But bed-and-breakfasts and accommodations in private homes are an option for shorter periods, going for about 20 to 60 Euros per person per day. Information is available at www.montagnedoc.it. However, even these opportunities are quite limited.
There are some good choices for people visiting Turin during less hectic times. Hotel Canelli (Via Santo Dalmazzo 5b) has clean rooms in a quiet alley. From the main train station, Turin Porta Nuova, take bus line 52 to Cernaia, turn right down Via Gianone, then turn left onto V.S. Dalmazzo (Tel: 0039 011537166. Singles 24 Euros, doubles 32 Euros. No English spoken).
Hotel Genova e Stazione is housed in a late 19th century building. The hotel is situated in the centre of Turin in a historical district close to Via Roma and Piazza Carlo Felice, right next to the Porta Nuova railway station. Use your most knowing attitude when you make a reservation, and the receptionist will give you the best price.
Torino Card: These 48-hour (approximately 8 Euros) or 72-hour (10 Euros) tourist cards will gain you access to all public transportation, allowing free entry to more than 130 attractions and provide discounts for theater, concerts, guided tours, bicycle rentals, shuttles to/from the airport and more. The card can be obtained through Turismo Torino information centers or hotels.
Shopping and wandering: Turin definitely has style. Fashionable shops such as Versace, Armani, Hermès, Cartier, Gucci and Prada occupy trendy shops along the Via Roma, where, of course, the most fashionable people stroll.
Where to eat: When you sit down for a meal, you should know that Turin is one of the nation's richest areas for the delicacy of white truffles, a very delicious type of mushroom. Turin also features some Italy's best meat dishes.
Osteria del F.I.A.T. (2 Via Biglieri) is an easy walk from the Lingotto, a huge American-style neighbourhood shopping mall. Here you'll find lots of locals and very nice waiters. Pasta is your best option. Main courses start from about 5 Euros.
Tré Galline, meaning Three Hens (37 Via Bellezia, www.3galline.it), is a long-established restaurant nestled in the Roman Quarter. It is a heaven for carnivores; boiled and grilled meats with potatoes top the menu. Main courses run from 8 - 12 Euros.
