In the center of the small town of Yingxian, 75 kilometers south of Datong, the stately Yingxian Pagoda stands as one of the oldest wooden buildings in China. Built in 1056 during the Liao dynasty, the octagonal pagoda, towering nearly 70m high with nine internal stories, is a masterpiece of structual engineering.
