Everything to See in Shanghai

A bit of more introduction to Shanghai, the financial go-go capital of China.

Despite unprecedented growth and modernization, Shanghai is not without problems, rapid development has created some of the highest real estate prices in the world, housing shortages contrast with high office building vacancy rates.

Though residents complain of pollution and traffic, my own impression is that both were far more under control than some other Asian cities.  And one can't assume a city like Shanghai, with such an extraordinarily rapid growth, won't develop without experiencing some degree of growing pains.

I obviously liked Shanghai. A lot.  It's a vibrant cosmopolitan city with an eye for the future and the motivation to get there.  But I didn't just sit on a street corner on Nanjing Lu gawking at the marvel of Shanghai, instead I sat on a few street corners, and walked a lot of streets. The only tourist attractions I went to in my four days were a ride to the top of the Pearl of the Orient TV tower, and a few hours in Yuyuan Bazaar and Gardens. The rest of the time was spent on the streets and in the parks. I didn't need a museum; Shanghai is a museum, a modern interactive exhibit of the new China. The only thing needed to take it all in is two open eyes and an open mind.

Oh, before I forget, another thing I like about Shanghai is the local cuisine.  Throughout China, Shanghaiese cuisine is known for being sweet and light.  For a true Shanghai specialty,  try the hairy crab, a fresh water crab that becomes mature in fall ¨C the crab roe is delectable. For street food, Shanghai's most famous contributions are the steamed buns, or fried meat dumplings. Dining options are numerous in Shanghai.  Because of Shanghai's large ex-pat community, cuisines from all over the world are available, from delicate Japanese sushi to tender Brazilian barbeque. Choices are unlimited and so are the prices, from dining out to jumping stall to stall eating street food, it's all deliciously available. This is my "on the Road" report, I hope you find a Shanghai exciting and interesting on your own trip. (Photo Source: baidu.com)
