Another scenic spot in northeast China is Songhua Lake located in Jilin city, Jilin Province. Screening the lake are mountains thickly covered with broad-leaved trees. The landscape on the mid-lake island is even more spectacular. Rowing on the lake and enjoying the autumn scenery is the number one choice for tourists.

Route: Travel to Changchun and then to Jilin by train or bus, where there are special buses running to Songhua Lake.

Accommodation: The Songhuahu Hotel, open all the year round, offers local dishes like the famous Songhua tullibee.

Tip: A sweater is a must as strong winds occur frequently on the lake in autumn.

A newly discovered spot for appreciating maple leaves, Tianqiaogou Valley is located in Kuandian, Liaoning Province. The National Forest Park there is known as the Little Lushan Mountain in northeast China. Stretches of maple trees thrive along the valley with maple leaves as red as fire. As a new scenic spot, its natural conditions are unspoiled. It is the ideal place for photographers and artists to acquire inspiration.

Route: First take a plane to Shenyang, then travel to Kuandian by train or bus, then take a special mini-bus to the destination.

Accommodation: The Tianqiao Hotel specializing in exotic food from the mountains is located in the center of the scenic spot.

Tip: The stream water along the mountain is clean and drinkable.

Along the sea in Panjin, Liaoning Province lies the Shuangtaizi River Mouth. Here exists a type of semi-transparent algae which starts to grow in July and turns dark red in October. Stretching for over 50 km, it resembles a grand red belt in autumn. There are also clusters of reeds shining in the golden sun.

Route: A direct bus from Shenyang will take you right to the seaside within four hours.

Accommodation: You need to take water and food to the seaside with you or you can find shelter in the city of Panjin.

Tip: As the climate is mild, just ordinary autumn wear is enough.
