Located at the northeast end of China, the Greater and Lessor Xinganling Mountains are known as the home of the larch.

Located at the northeast end of China, the Greater and Lessor Xinganling Mountains are known as the home of the larch. About 75 percent of the trees growing there are larches, and another 14 percent are white birches. So in autumn, the dominant hue of the Greater and Lessor Xinganling Mountains is reddish brown and golden.

Route: First take a plane to Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, then reach the destination either by train or by bus. A photographer is recommended to hire a cross-country jeep.

Accommodation: Food and shelter along the route is fairly convenient with hotels and hostels run by the local forestry bureaus.

Tip: Do remember to take cotton-padded clothes for it may snow at any time in autumn.

Changbaishan Mountain stands on the border of China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, its main peak split by the border. While the lower half of the mountain is dotted with golden birches and red maples, its peak is already covered with snow. When climbing the mountain, one will enjoy the different shades of autumn.

Route: First go to Changchun, Jilin Province, by air, then take a train to Baihe town where a mini-bus will take you to the scenic spot.

Accommodation: At the foot of Changbaishan Mountain are many resorts, offering Korean food.

Tip: Pay special attention to the extreme changes in temperature along the mountain and for safety reasons do not go through the Heifengkou pass when there is a strong wind.
