"Jiang Nan", or "river south", refers to the vast area in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, where quite a few tourist cities are studded, among which Suzhou and Hangzhou are the most famous.

Suzhou is a well-known tourist and cultural city with a history of 2500 years. Its numerous rivers and canals, its many small bridges over flowing water, and its famous private gardens combine to make Suzhou one of the most fascinating cities in southeast China. Macao Polo thought it could rival his own hometown in Italy and called it "Venice in the Orient."
