Nagqu is an important pass in Northern Tibet. Here holy lakes, holy mountains, mysterious no-man's lands and horse-racing festival attract an endless flow of visitors and worshippers.

Nagqu Horse Racing Meet

August is the peak season for the Nagqu grasslands. The days are clear while the nights bring bid winds and rain. The annual grasslands horse-racing festival is held at this time. During the horse-racing festival, there are thousands of tents set up in this area. It makes the grasslands look like a small town. The horse racing festivals and fairs are traditional occasions for horse trading. The buying and selling of horses at these fairs attracts Tibetans from near and far.

It is the grandest of the racing festivals and events held throughout Tibet each year. Dressed in traditional military attire, the Tibetans proudly display their riding skills, attracting enthusiastic crowds of locals and pilgrims. Lasting several days, many songs, dances, and performances of Tibetan drama take place during the festivities to celebrate the heroes of Tibet's past.
