In China, 11th November marks "Singles Day" - a celebration for single people that has turned into the world's biggest online shopping event. Also known as "Double 11", because of the date, Singles Day has become synonymous with huge online discounts, and consequently, huge online spending.

So, how has Singles Day developed into the phenomenon it is today? What drives Chinese consumers to shop online? And is 11th November set to become a global e-commerce holiday?

Ni hao, you are listening to  People In the Know, presenting you with insights into the headline news in China and around the world. I'm Nick Lanigan in Beijing.

In today's program, we are joined by LI Yang, Assistant Professor of Marketing at Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, and Patrick J. Murphy, entrepreneurship expert and Professor at Driehaus College of Business, DePaul University, in Chicago.

Professor Murphy is also DePaul University's Director of University China Engagement.
