2014-11-27 Visa Diplomacy
   2014-11-27 09:48:42    CRIENGLISH.com      Web Editor: Ding Heng

Previously, acquiring a visa was, in many cases, a challenge for Chinese nationals seeking to travel abroad.

Applications for tourist or short-term business visas required very long processing times, tiresome bureaucracy for the applicant, and often the application might be denied.

Additionally, the number of countries that Chinese citizens could visit without applying for a visa were very limited.

Today, more and more countries are opening their doors to Chinese visitors as the benefits for the recipient countries become more obvious.

Diplomatic efforts on all sides are pushing this trend. For example, in 2011, the 26 countries in the Schengen area in Europe made an agreement harmonizing their previously differing visa requirements to Chinese tourists, facilitating Chinese tourism in Europe.

More recently, an agreement between the US and China at the APEC summit saw a radical increase in the validity duration of visas of many kinds, between both countries.

The countries that allow Chinese citizens no-visa travel, or visa-on-arrival travel, has also increased.

So how do experts see the trends in China's "Visa Diplomacy"? What will the future hold for Chinese citizens seeking overseas experiences?

Ni Hao, you're listening to People In the Know, bringing you insights into the headlines in China and around the world, I'm Zheng Chenguang in Beijing.
