2014-04-02 Mergers and Acquisitions Abroad of Chinese Companies
2014-04-02 13:38:13    Beyond Beijing      Web Editor: Zhang Kun

Panel discussion:
In a recent report by the well-respected economics magazine Caijing, it concluded that Geely, the Chinese automaker which bought Sweden's Volvo, has managed to strike a balance between localizing the esteemed brand whilst maintaining quality, and has even made some minor gains to show for it.
This came after Volvo sold a total of 61,000 cars in 2013 in China--that's up 46 percent from previous year--making China the most profitable market for the company.
The same can be said for Wanda whose investment in U.S. movie-theater chain AMC Entertainment has also seen its earnings doubled to 2 billion US dollars--more than making up for the cost of acquisition in the first place.
So Geely and Wanda are just two success stories. Many more have tried mergers and acquisitions abroad with varying degrees of success. We'll spend the next hour discussing some of that and examine the potential pitfalls and challenges when it all goes belly up.

Global Talks:
Today we are debating the Malaysian government releasing the full transcript of communications between missing jetliner MH370 and ground controllers, NATO suspending all-around cooperation with Russia, US Secretary of State John Kerry cancelling his Middle East visit as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas signs more than a dozen of international conventions unilaterally, as well as Japan to ease its arms export ban for the first time in half a century.
