2014-03-11 Education Reform: The Future of College Entrance Exams in China
   2014-03-08 17:51:31    CRIENGLISH.com      Web Editor: Lu Chang

In his first government work report delivered during the opening session of the NPC, China's top legislature, China's Premier Li Keqiang promised that China would further increase the number of rural students who are admitted into China's key universities. Experts believe that part of the solution to make that happen will be to devise a more sensible Gaokao or college entrance exam that can better screen talents.

One recent worrisome phenomenon is that the number of rural students being admitted to China's top universities witnessed a decline in the past year. The reasons behind this decline may be complicated, but the first thing that policy makers have to look into is whether the existing college entrance examination system is designed well enough to offer students, no matter urban or rural, a level-playing field.

The uneven allocation of educational resources has created an education gap between China's urban and rural areas. This has proved impossible to solve overnight. But policy makers can target the low hanging fruits by first improving the Gaokao system.

So, to improve the Gaokao system, where can we start? Should we lessen the weight of some subjects in the exams, such as English, to make the selection process more sensible?
