2014-03-06 Chinese-Afghan Ties

Panel discussion:
With just a month to go until the start of the Afghan presidential election, and with American forces counting down to their departure at the end of this year, some are looking to China to perhaps fill that void in terms of economics, security and diplomacy.
The Chinese foreign minister paid a visit to Kabul not that long ago; Afghan president Hamid Karzai is a regular visitor to Beijing and on the surface, the two neighbours seem like a good fit. Afghanistan is rich in minerals and oil and China needs them; the two can also fight Islamic extremism together. Conversely, China's investments could bring real benefits to the war-torn nation and provide stability which in turn could help turn Afghanistan around.
In reality, of course, it's a lot more complicated than that. Regional players, security concerns, religious fundamentalism, shortcomings in China's foreign experience...all of these will complicate matters.

Global Talks:
Today we are debating gulf ambassadors pulling from Qatar over "interference", diplomatic row over the Ukraine crisis between Russia and the US, Thai government set to extend the state of emergency, as well as South Sudan soldiers dying in a "pay battle" at army headquarters.
