2013-02-22 Outlook of Italian Election
    2013-02-21 17:23:06     CRIENGLISH.com         Web Editor: Chen Cong

Italy is facing a critical moment, as its upcoming election will set the future direction for Europe's third largest economy. Over the past year, outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti has carried out a series of reforms to make Italy more competitive. It is now widely believed that Italy needs more of Monti's reforms.

But as the polls indicate, Mario Monti is far from the most popular candidate ahead of election. Leading the polls is Pier Luigi Bersani, who is from the centre-left coalition. Mr. Bersani has a reasonable record as a reformer in past governments, but the surprising comeback of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who failed to bring reform to Italy while in office, has made Italy's political scene more complicated.

Many have hoped that Bersani will be able to form a coalition with Monti so that Italy can get a healthy dose of reform and revive its stalled economy.

So, what is on the minds of the majority of Italian voters at the moment? And what challenges does Italy face as it works to grapple with unemployment and waning competitiveness?
