Today, China officially convenes the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Beijing. For more than six decades, the ever-changing domestic and international environment has put the CPC to the test. The CPC has weathered all of the difficulties and retained its position as China's ruling party. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, China's political system has operated smoothly as it constantly makes adjustments to adapt to new realities. That said, the CPC has never ceased its efforts to explore ways to promote socialist democracy in China. It has allowed direct elections at the village level. And more reform is expected as the new generation of Chinese leaders assumes office.

So, what great changes have taken place within the party and China's political system in the past six decades? And what impact will grassroots democracy have on China in the future?
