This week marks an important milestone for Egypt. The country's presidential election is underway, with voters expecting the first new president since the fall of Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.

50 million Egyptian voters will decide which one of the 12 candidates will be leading the country. The competition for the presidency is mainly between Islamists and secular politicians. Their relationship with the past regime and their stance on foreign policy issues and the economy are likely to be the key factors determining the election results.

So what influence will the presidential election have on Egypt and the rest of the world? And what expectations do Egyptians have for their future?

Ni hao, you're listening to  People In the Know, bringing you insights into the headline news in China and around the world, I'm Li Peichun sitting for Zheng Chenguang in Beijing. In this edition of the program, we are taking a look at the presidential election in Egypt.
