In Beijing, cool events and trendy recycled clothing accessories are just another way that organizations in Beijing are adding a new approach to locally relevant issues like energy conservation, preservation of the city's old hutong areas and recycling.
For example, starting in March, local environmental NGO Greening the Beige initiated a series of "trashion shows" at electronic label Acupuncture Record's venue, Lantern Club, featuring clothes made from recycled materials as well as accessories by local Beijing hutong area store NLGX.
NLGX works with other local groups to help preserve the hutongs and raise awareness of environmental issues in Beijing.
"NLGX is our own clothing brand that we started out of the hutongs of Nanluoguxiang. The three of us are all overseas Chinese and to show our appreciation for the city and the country with all these crazy and interesting developments going on, we created a clothing brand that represents this change."
NLGX Marketing Director Ed Hung is referring to Beijing's ancient hutong roads that provide a glimpse into the past 700 years ago.
However, Nanluoguxiang is unlike other UNESCO World Heritage sites in Beijing such as the Forbidden City or the Temple of Heaven because although the alley may look ancient on the outside with its cobble stoned walkway and beautiful courtyards, the buildings' interiors reflect Beijing's modern bohemian culture of artists and musicians.
