Chinese consumers are very likely to soon receive government subsidies when buying cars powered by new energy. Officials say the government is considering extending subsidies to individuals who buy plug-in hybrid, battery-powered or electric cars as part of its low carbon development strategy.

Last week, China's BYD Auto made quite a splash in unveiling its four-door electric car at the Detroit auto show. BYD hopes to penetrate the highly competitive North American market with its A Class electric cars and even set up its production lines in Europe or America. Meanwhile, BYD is not the only Chinese auto maker who is thinking big. Many more Chinese auto makers see electric vehicles as an opportunity for them to compete again with Western peers on an equal footing.
