The United Nations has mourned the loss of 101 of its personnel who were killed by the devastating earthquake in Haiti in January. It was the single greatest loss of staff in the UN's history. CRI's UN correspondent Shen Ting has more.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, together with the Organization's staff and the family and friends of the 101 personnel paid tribute to those who died during the the earthquake in Haiti.
Ban Ki-moon said the 101 personnel shared a common conviction ¨C a belief in a better future for the people of Haiti, and a common resolve to help them build it.
"At the United Nations, we don't simply share office space; we share a passion for a better world. To those we have lost, let us say: we will never forget you. We will carry on your work."
General Assembly President Ali Treki also paid tribute to the fallen.
"I believe one way to pay tribute to their service and sacrifice is to demonstrate our continued determination to support Haiti and its people."
He said the major challenge is to ensure that Haiti can continue to develop, and it is up to the international community to carry out this objective.
During the ceremony, the names of the 101 staff members who were killed in the quake were read aloud. The ceremony was attended by senior UN officials, representatives of Member States, and colleagues from the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti.
