This is the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, where the 2009 Icograda World Design Congress is currently being held. This week long event from the 24th to 30th of October will include internationally renowned keynote speakers, remarks from officials, performances and award ceremonies. We took our cameras inside so you could check out what the buzz was about.
The opening ceremony started off with host Yang Lan, followed by speeches from officials and keynote speakers including a very memorable David Kester, the chief executive of the British Design Council. [video]
The rope cutting concluded the opening ceremony but marked the official beginning of the event. [video]
Beside speeches, there were fun activities and exhibitions. Drawing your impression of the National Centre for the Performing Arts onto t-shirts and plates attracted a lot of participants, while one particular drawing attracted a lot of attention. We caught up with the artist, Paula DiMarco, co-VP of education at AIGA Los Angeles, about her art and her upcoming speech. [video]
Another participant Bekki, a graduate of Sichuan Fine Arts School and now a University design teacher gave us her thoughts on the congress, design and the future of China. [video]
As you can see, people from all over the world have come to check out this event. Well, that's it for my day, but this and a lot more will be here for you to check out, in the coming week.
