That's how Joanne encourages her son as well as other young people. "When you come to China, don't say I am coming to China to teach, say I am coming to China to learn. Every minute is learning. Seeing is learning, talking to people is learning, sharing your ideas is learning. If you are doing that, then you are in the right place."
"Bit by bit, the whole world will change. Everyone will start to realize that China has really moved on and China is very international. And Chinese people, irrespective of how many generations you are away, you should be and can be a proud Chinese."
Meanwhile, Joanne reveals she is also planning a new program for older generations of overseas Chinese. Having worked so hard for decades to survive in foreign countries, many of them are at a loss after they retire and their kids get married. Joanne hopes that her company can organize for such people to return to China in groups. She wants to place them in a peaceful village of a southern city like Guangzhou for one or two months, and teach them how to use computers, how to cook, how to play Taichi or dance and even laugh freely. "I want them to be young again." Joanne says.
From east to west, from younger generations to older generations, Joanne devotes herself to education and in making efforts to bridge the straits. She is a woman of ideas and dreams.
"What drives me is seeing Chinese from different parts of the world coming back to the roots of when their parents, or actually their great grandparents left, being proud of being Chinese."
