Agriculture and health minister from the Arab Maghreb Union met Friday in Tunis to discuss joining forces in the battle against bird flu.
As a result of the meeting, the delegates from Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunis agreed to work together to formulate a common strategy to monitor migratory birds, likely carriers of the disease.
They said that although the virus had not been found in Maghreb areas, the five north African countries should share information on bird flu, exchange experience, cooperate with international organizations and take effective measures to prevent bird flu from spreading.
The officials said they would continue to monitor poultry and be especially vigilant about the annual influx of migratory birds throughout the region.
The Arab Maghreb Union was founded in 1989, comprising Algeria,Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunis.
