Chinese envoy attends inauguration of Ukrainian president

Chinese President Xi Jinping's special envoy, Cai Wu, attended the inauguration ceremony of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Saturday.
In a brief conversation with the Ukrainian leader, Cai passed on President Xi's congratulations.
He said that China highly values its strategic partnership with Ukraine and is willing to promote the sound and steady development of China-Ukraine relations on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.
Poroshenko said the relations between Ukraine and China have been developing smoothly, with fruitful results yielded in various fields of cooperation.
He invited Chinese leaders to his country at any time convenient for them.


Russia says ready for talks with Ukraine when there are no artillery fires

Russia says it is ready for talks with Ukraine only when there are no artillery fires in the country.
Valentina Matviyenko, head of the Russian parliament's upper house insists that Ukraine "terminate the punitive operation", saying artillery fire is unacceptable for such meetings and talks.
Matviyenko also says that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko should make it clear that his country cannot overcome the crisis without Russia.
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry has demanded that Kiev take urgent measures and release the two journalists from the Russian TV channel Zvezda (the Star), who were detained near Slovyansk in eastern Ukraine Friday.


Chinese negotiator urges political mutual trust in climate negotiations

China's chief climate negotiator has called for enhanced political mutual trust among all parties in climate negotiations.
Xie Zhenhua said political mutual trust should be boosted to set a political "foundation" for improving global climate change responses and reaching a new agreement in the regard.
He made the remarks at a ministerial meeting on climate change in Bonn.
The Chinese official said the trust can only be built when parties fulfill their commitments and bolster actions against climate change.
He said developed countries should play a leading role in the process of addressing climate change.


Official says some 30 killed in east DR Congo's conflict

Around 30 people were killed Saturday morning in attacks in South Kivu, east of Democratic Republic of Congo.
A local official says the victims, including women and children, were shot, stabbed or burned in houses.
He said the attacks were caused by a dispute over cows and people from diverse tribes were involved in the conflict.


Light transport plane crashes in Russia, one dead

A light utility transport plane crashed in Russia's Yaroslavl region Saturday and the pilot was killed.
The Itar-Tass news agency reports a search is under way as a second person might have been on board.
Preliminary reports show that the privately-owned plane was making an unauthorized flight when it crashed.

Iran to hold direct talks with U.S. ahead of Vienna nuclear meeting

Iran says it hold direct talks with the United States early this week ahead of the Vienna nuclear meeting later this month.
The meeting will be held at the deputy ministerial level in Geneva on Monday and Tuesday.
Iran will also talk with Russia on the nuclear issue in Rome on Wednesday and Thursday.
Bilateral meetings between Iran and other members of the P5+1 group will also be held before the Vienna nuclear meeting slated for June 16.


China's cabinet to inspect policy implementation

The State Council, China's cabinet, will dispatch eight inspection teams to check the implementation of its policies nationwide.
The inspection will last from June 25 to July 5 on policies launched by the State Council since July 2013.
A statement says despite progress in the past year, many policies have not been fully carried out nor have they had the effects they should have. The inspection teams will focus on 19 areas. Local governments found wanting will be held accountable.

China's winter wheat harvest halfway home

Chinese farmers in major wheat growing regions are harvesting this week and, with the help of good weather, more than 50 percent of winter wheat has been taken in.
The Ministry of Agriculture says farmers have harvested wheat in 172 million mu or more than 11 million hactares of fields, with 87 percent gathered by machinery.
More than 95 percent of the winter wheat in the major production bases including Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong have been harvested.
China produced 120 million tonnes of wheat last year, one fifth of the world's total.
The ministry urges local authorities to keep a close eye on the weather and accelerate harvesting to ensure a good return.


World University Taekwondo Championships kick off in North China

World University Taekwondo Championships kicked off Saturday in Hohhot, capital of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
More than 300 players from 34 countries and regions including the United States, France, Turkey, Mexico, Australia and China will be contesting in 31 individual and team divisions.
The World University Taekwondo Championships, which were inaugurated in 1990, are held every two years.
