Chinese premier arrives in Kenya for visit

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has arrived in Nairobi for a visit to Kenya, the last leg of his first Africa visit since he took office in 2013.
Li Keqiang said he expects to deeply exchange views with Kenyan leaders on bilateral relations and issues of common concern, so as to push forward the China-Kenya comprehensive cooperative partnership based on mutual trust and mutual benefit.
The Chinese premier will also meet officials from the United Nations Environment Program and the United Nations Human Settlements Program, and discuss with them China's cooperation with the two UN agencies during his stay in Kenya.
Before Kenya, Li Keqiang visited Ethiopia, Nigeria and Angola.



Putin arrives in Sevastopol for Victory Day event

Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken part in a ceremony marking Victory Day in the Crimean port city of Sevastapol.
Speaking at the event, Putin has congratulated the city, saying 2014 will mark a new beginning for the city.
This is Putin's first visit to Crimea since the former Ukranian region voted to join the Russian Federation earlier this year.
Ukrainian authorities have responded, calling Putin's visit to Crimea an "escalation."
May 9th marks Victory Day in the former Soviet Union as the day when it declared victory over Germany in World War II.
As part of his time in Sevastapol, where Russia's Black Sea fleet is located, Putin is taking part in a number of events and meetings with military officials.


China welcomes Russia's move in Ukraine crisis

China says it welcomes constructive efforts toward political resolution of the Ukraine crisis.
Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters in Beijing that China supports the adoption of measures that could ease current tensions and push for political resolution of the crisis.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday Russia had withdrawn an estimated 40,000 troops from the Ukrainian border. Putin also called on the militia in east Ukraine to postpone their referendum slated for May 11.



Thai police fire teargas at protesters

Opposition protesters in Thailand have once-again taken to the streets in what they're describing as a final push to topple the interim government ahead of July's election.
Protesters in Bangkok have launched several marches on government buildings and media outlets, demanding an audience with the country's interim Prime Minister or any member of the caretaker cabinet
A number of protesters have been injured after police fired tear gas to try to dispurse the crowds at one of the protest sites.


U.S. honors Chinese railroad workers

U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) on Friday hosted a public ceremony to mark inducting of 12,000 Chinese railroad workers, who worked between 1865 to 1869 in the country, into the agency's Hall of Honor.
Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez said at the ceremony the Chinese railroad workers accounted for 85 percent of the labor force on the Central Pacific Railroad, the largest workforce in the United States at the time.
He praised the Chinese workers by saying their work was crucial to the completion of the nation's first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

Xi urges continuing efforts to improve work sytle

President Xi Jinping has called for effective measures to prevent the ongoing campaign that aims to improve work style of officials from turning into "half-cooked rice."
He told Lankao County officials in central China's Henan Province that the campaign should not be reduced to a mere formality or conducted in a perfunctory way.
Xi Jinping said each case concerning unhealthy work style, especially those reported by grassroots citizens, should be dealt with and solved.


2 killed, 4 injured in NE China coal mine blast

Two people have been killed and another four injured in an explosion in a coal mine in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.
The local government says the blast took place Friday afternoon at Xintie mine in Qitaihe City. Eighty miners were working underground at the time.
Cause of the accident is under investigation.


China's police chief urges security focus at key venues

China's Minister of Public Security Guo Shengkun has urged deployment of as many police officers as possible to key public venues at crucial times to deter crime.
He made the remarks during an inspection in central China's Hunan Province over the past four days.
While inspecting Changsha Railway Station, business plazas and other crowded public places, Guo Shengkun called on police departments at all levels to step up security and deter criminals.


China issues first capital market guideline

China's cabinet, the State Council, has unveiled the guiding principles of regulations for the capital market in coming years.
The first guideline envisions a multi-tier capital market by 2020 with a proper structure, functions and regulations, high efficiency and inclusiveness.
