Turkey is sending humanitarian aid to the violence-hit cities of neighboring Iraq, particularly to the Turkmen-populated areas, a Turkish high-ranking official said on Monday.

"It is very important for our Turkmen brothers to get humanitarian needs," Deputy Foreign Minister Naci Koru said in a press briefing in the Turkish capital of Ankara.

Meanwhile, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has also begun sending humanitarian aid, including tents and food supplies, to the conflict-torn Iraq, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said.

Iraq's military and Shiite militias are gearing up to fight the Sunni insurgents who have advanced across the country since last week.

In its latest success, militant groups on Monday reportedly took complete control of the Turkmen-populated city of Tal Afar in Iraq's northern province of Nineveh.

The Sunni-majority province of Nineveh and its capital Mosul has long been a stronghold for insurgent groups, including al- Qaida militants, since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Large parts of the province are now in the hands of militant groups after bloody clashes with Iraqi security forces.
