South Korea's Unification Church held a mass wedding on Sunday - its first since the death last year of its leader and founder, Reverend Sun Myung Moon.

About 3,500 couples took part in the ceremony at the Cheongshim World Peace Centre, in Gapyeong, about 60 kilometres northeast of the capital, Seoul.

Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church, died of complications from pneumonia last year, aged 92.

His widow, Hak Ja Han, presided over Sunday's ceremony, sprinkling holy water over the couples and delivering a congratulatory message.

The newly wedded couples have expressed their happiness.

"I'm really excited Krissa (his bride) is the most beautiful, lovely lady I've ever met, so I feel really lucky to have a girl like her in my life."

According to the church, about a thousand new couples tied the knot, while more than 8,500 couples from all over the world participated via a live-streamed broadcast.
The Unification Church claims millions of members worldwide.
