The UN Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the panel of experts on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
In the resolution, the 15-nation council "decides to extend until 12 July 2013 the mandate of the panel of experts" and " expresses its intent to review the mandate and take appropriate action regarding further extension no later than 12 June 2013."
The panel of experts was created by the Security Council through Resolution 1874, passed in 2009. The group operates under the direction of the council's committee established pursuant to Resolution 1718.
The panel is tasked with helping the committee gather information and provide feedback to the council on the implementation of sanctions and embargoes imposed on the DPRK by the Security Council.
The resolution "urges all states, relevant United Nations bodies and other interested parties to cooperate fully with the committee established pursuant to Resolution 1718 and the panel of experts, in particular by supplying any information at their disposal on the implementation of the measures imposed by Resolution 1718 and Resolution 1874."
The members of the council also noted in the resolution that they will "continue to follow the work of the panel" and requested midterm and final reports from the panel on its work.
