An earthquake measuring 6.0 degrees on the Richter scale on Saturday jolted far off Mexico Pacific Coast, the National Seismological Service reported. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties and no tsunami warning was issued.

The report said that the quake occurred at 11:47 a.m. (18:47) GMT with a depth of 16 km, which was centered 86 km southwest of Mapastepec, a town of nearly 50,000 inhabitants in the southern state of Chiapas.

In Mapastepec, local residents said that at the time of earthquake they were afraid of the collapse of their homes, while Red Cross officials said that they have received reports of some fallen objects, but causing no injuries.

"We feel the movement that blew the windows and roofs," said Lucia Sanchez, a resident of the area. Authorities said there was no panic among the population and many people stormed to the streets.

The earthquake has affected several states of southern Mexico and even Guatemala and El Slavador, although reports of casualties or damages were not immediately available.

The tremor was also felt in some areas of Mexico City, located more than 800 miles from the epicenter, but according to a statement from Public Security Ministry, no damage has been reported, although it has launched the Plan of Assistance and Protection of Population.

Mexico and Central America have been frequently shaken by tremors in recent years. Last December, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, which left three dead and several injured.
