The UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is set to intensify crackdown on militia on Thursday in the Central African country's restive Ituri district.

The action was announced by the military spokesman for the United Nations Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO), lieutenant-colonel Felix Prosper Basse, on Wednesday.

The operation dubbed "Santa Claus Ituri" aims to prevent the militia spotted in Ituri and ensure the free movement of people during the festive season.

The MONUSCO spokesman said activities of militia groups like the Ituri Patriotic Resistance Front and the Alliance of Democratic Forces of the National Army for Liberation of Uganda (ADF-NALU) have been reported in the territories of Mambasa, Mahagi, Aveba and Bunia.

On Dec. 12, fighters of the ADF-NALU ambushed the DR Congo Armed Forces (FARDC) in North Kivu province, according to the spokesman.

On Dec. 14, the Bangladesh battalion of MONUSCO deployed a rapid intervention patrol unit when a group of about 90 armed men looted 13 houses in Bazanga and got away with money and other household items, he said.

MONUSCO and FARDC also launched the "Santa Claus" operation on Dec. 18 in Haut Uele and Bas-Uele in the same province.
