Senior Panamanian government officials resigned on Wednesday in a protest against the firing of foreign minister by President Ricardo Martinelli.

The resignations were led by Finance Minister Alberto Vallarino who said that on Tuesday he and other top officials from Panamist Party would quit the government due to the president's decision to fire Juan Carlos as foreign minister.

Vallarino said he has worked with great commitment, loyalty, creativity and enthusiasm to achieve great things for the country and contribute to developing an investment plan in Panama. He said he would remain in office until his successor has taken office.

Martinelli on Tuesday appointed Trade and Industry Minister Roberto Henriquez as the new foreign minister, replacing Varela.

Martinelli asked for Varela's resignation after political differences emerged between Varela's Panamist Party and Martinelli's Democratic Change Party.
